She's a tricky beast, but can be very mind opening... any specific question?

My recommendations with the leaf is to use something else to calm one's mind at first, then proceed with carefully smoking at least 2 grams..

      I HIGHLY agree with frak.
I have seen some people go very paranoid from tripping on salvia+drama and don't reccommend it much. But I have found that if you find a way of quieting your mind, salvia can be an EXCELLENT tool in the "spiritual" world. I also reccomend it to people already good at meditation and mind-quieting exercises.
      Very useful. Very emotional.

I've read that an easy and effective way to take Salvia is to take the dried leaves, crumble them, and drink them in water.

      Has anyone tried this method?

Who do you recommend for suppliers of plants/leaves/samples?

Don't drink them - the active chemical is not absorbed much in the stomach.

Rather, soak the whole leaves in water for a few minutes to soften them, chew them without swallowing for as long as you can (25 minutes), then spit out. You will feel the effects begin after about 12 minutes of chewing. This is a traditional method, called a "quid", which produces a trip with a half-hour peak, longer than smoking and more controllable, but much less intense for the amount of leaves used. Start with 16-20 largish leaves - probably as much as you can hold in your mouth - however the dose needed varies a lot for different people.

You'll get used to the taste!

If you can stand the godawful taste =)

The tradition method, of chewing bunches of leaves wadded up in your cheek, tastes nothing short of ass.

5x extract is usually a good bet, but it's best to get from a reputable seller; not from some random porn/head shop. Daniel Siebert, an expert on S.D., has a shop on his site.. www.sagewisdom.org; though, he is a little pricey. basementshaman.com is another decent source, that I think is a little cheaper.

Siebert also sells a liquid extract, which seems to have quite a good reputation, but I have yet to sample it.

I bought and used the liquid 'tincture' I think it was called back in 2000 from Siebert. The directions for consumption required holding this stuff in your mouth as to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the muscara-whatevera under your tongue etc. The trip to that is that the tincture is so alchoholic it leaves your tongue and mouth all numb and 'burnt' like if you jump into a pizza thats too hot.

Aside from that if you can handle the taste and the extremely awkward absorbtion ritual (no talking for 20 minutes or whatever while you try not to swallow this crap) then what awaits after the end of it all can be extremely novel. I did it in both a group and a solo setting and both experiences were radically different. The visuals were not typical of other psychedelics I've done and I would be hard pressed to explain with any coherency what the experience is like except to say that, especially when you're not over stimulated by conversation or activity, like if you zone out and stare at a desk or something, you might find yourself experience being a desk-- what you observe you sort of recontextualize yourself into.

which of course makes looking in a mirror a kind of mindfuck in a totally different way.

There is one other problem and that is that it wont work for everyone the first time around. For me it took 2 or 3 attempts before I got it right. But for a patient enthusiast, its worth a go.

I never tried smoking it or chewing it. Maybe that would be easier?

i finally broke down and tried the ticnture... and i have to say, i think i still prefer smoking it.

i think, strictly speaking, i like the effects of the tincture better.... it comes on a bit more gradually, so the experience would be bit easier to work with... if it wasn't for the horrible sludge you have to hold in your mouth for 15 minutes. that really cuts into the experience, i think.

because of that, i think i like the smoked better... the negatives of the tincture outweigh the positives, for me...

Ass actually tastes better if it's clean and having had extract that burned my entire oral cavity I'd have to recommend against anything of the sort. Get or grow the real thing and you'll have a better time of it because you've put forth the engergy to make it happen.

          Trip

I've had about five experiences with salvia, two were not so good, but one blew any psychedelic expereinces i'd had before away, including DMT.

At least five minutes of communion with a meta-serpent in fully immersive psycho space, the visions responded to my spoken queries and I was left energized and inspired.

If you take something to calm yourself make certain it's not marijuana, this will just make the visions dim and confusing. see lycaeum.org fro advice on set and setting, and techniques for injestion

The one time I tried Salvia I followed Frak's procedure; the calmative I took in advance was Kava Kava. Then I smoked a buncha Salvia. It worked very well. Fortunately I had a "guide" who didn't do any herself but made me really comfortable and apparently knew to give me a calmative first. (This was in a hotel in SF right after the first Mind States conference in 1997.)

It was great. The visuals were all these patterns and structures of fine, fine fibers made of light. I was reminded of vegetable fibers, or textile fibers (and now looking back, I'm thinking it all looked very axodendritic, but I didn't think of that at the time). I felt like I was in touch with some sort of throbbing jungley planetary collective plant/vegetable/rainforest intelligence-consciousness.

Neat, unique. I've heard others have had the light-fiber visual thing w/ Salvia. There was also a lot of perception of bioenergetic phenomena coextensive with my body; at one point the energy seemed to pool for awhile in my genital region, pleasurably but without overt physical arousal.

Ok, I know I'm a little late in replying to this (I just joined tribe.net today), but I wanted to share my experience with salvia.
Basically, it did nothing. Perhaps I did something wrong, because my first try, nothing happened. My second try, I inhaled my hit, then I started laughing and I could not stop - so that bugged me. I didn't want to be hysterically laughing. I felt heavy, like gravity was weighing down on me. By the time I finished laughing, nothing was happening anymore. I was back to normal. It felt like less than a minute, but I didn't look at the clock, so I have no idea. I dunno. I love to trip, but I prefer for it to last a while, which is why I prefer good ol' Uncle Cid - but he hasn't paid a visit to me or my friends in a few years now.
